As a professional photographer on the Gold Coast, I’ve grown used to chasing golden hour through surf breaks, high-rises, and headlands, but one evening, I found myself drawn somewhere different. Somewhere quieter. More refined. A little unexpected.

Emerald Lakes.

Nestled just inland from the coastline, Emerald Lakes isn’t your typical Gold Coast scene. It oozes charm, like a pocket of Europe was carefully folded into suburban Queensland. Colourful townhouses with shuttered windows line the waterfront, narrow laneways twist past boutiques and cafés, and reflections ripple softly in the still lake below. I’d photographed it from the ground before, but this time, I wanted to capture its elegance from above. From the sky. At sunset.

I arrived just as the light began to warm. The sky shifted from soft blue to golden amber, casting long shadows across the water. I unpacked the drone on the edge of the lake, the air still and calm, the kind of perfect stillness every aerial photographer dreams of.

As I lifted off, the view opened up and it was breathtaking as the sun dipped below the mountains.

From above, Emerald Lakes looked like a painting. The terracotta rooftops glowed in the last rays of sun, their colours deepening into burnt orange and blush pink. The village wrapped around the lake like a European crescent, its reflections rippling below like melted gold.

I flew slow and low at first, tracking the arched bridges and cobbled walkways, capturing the symmetry and soft light. The golden hour was hitting its peak, sunbeams putting colour into the clouds, casting a warm glow on the facades and dancing across the water’s surface.

The lake itself was a mirror. Not much wind, just a ripple. And in that stillness, everything became more beautiful. The village shimmered, before lanterns began to flicker to life, the whole scene steeped in serenity and subtle grandeur.

I climbed the drone higher and tilted it back to frame the scene, the lake, the village, and the sun setting beyond the distant hinterland. The sky melted into gold and orange, purple and blues and I captured frame after frame, the kind of images that felt more like postcards from a dream than real life.

As the sun dipped behind the hills, and the last light softened into twilight, I brought the drone down slowly, grateful. Emerald Lakes had given me something different that night—something timeless.

Not just another coastal sunset. But a quiet reminder that beauty doesn’t always need crashing waves or dramatic cliffs. Sometimes, it comes in the form of reflections, colour, and calm, wrapped in the architecture of somewhere far away, but somehow, still home.
