We were an hour into the drive south from Port Douglas, heading back from a tropical escape that already felt like a dream. The road wound lazily along the coastline, framed by lush rainforest on one side and glimpses of the Coral Sea on the other. The kind of drive where you don’t say much, you just take in the silence, the scenery, and the slow unwinding of holiday mode.

Somewhere just south of Oak Beach, we noticed a narrow pull-off near the water, nothing signposted, no caravans, no crowds. Just a sliver of beach and the whisper of the tide. We pulled over, stretched our legs, and walked across the warm stones toward the ocean.

That’s when we found it.

The Gatz Balancing Rocks.

It felt like we’d stumbled into someone else’s secret. Dozens of small, smooth, wave-washed stones stacked in impossible formations along the shoreline—each one defying gravity with quiet elegance. No fences, no plaques. Just art left behind by other wanderers, shaped by the sea and balanced by patient hands.

I walked a little farther and saw it:
Three stacks, close together, each unique, but one in particular caught my breath.

Eleven stones high.

All perfectly smoothed by the ocean, each one slightly different in shape, colour, and size, ranging from the size of a fist to pebble. Balanced delicately on top of each other, it rose like a sculpture of time itself, daring the breeze and the pull of gravity to undo it.

I crouched low and pulled out my camera. Behind the stones, the ocean shimmered turquoise and blue, the horizon stretching wide beneath a canvas of distant, fluffy white clouds. Overhead, the sky was a deep, uninterrupted blue, one of those Far North Queensland skies that doesn’t seem real until you’re standing under it.

I framed the shot tight, three stacks in the foreground, the eleven-rock tower standing tall on the right, like some kind of ancient totem, with the sea and sky rolling away behind it. Click.

There was no wind. No sound but the sea. And no one around except my wife Mrs Smith.

Just us, the rocks, and the silence of a sacred little spot that didn’t need to be on a map to matter.

We didn’t stay long, just enough time to take a few photos, breathe it all in, and leave it untouched.

A perfect farewell to the north. A quiet reminder that beauty doesn’t always announce itself, sometimes, it waits in silence, beside the sea.
