About To Break
Photographed 1 July 2025 | Surfers Paradise

Some days, the ocean performs without an audience. No surfers. No footprints in the sand. Just one perfect wave, rising and folding in complete silence. This was one of those rare winter mornings on the Gold Coast where time seemed to slow down.

It was 1 July 2025, and a westerly wind sliced neatly across the coastline, grooming the ocean into a living sculpture. The midday sun lit the scene with gold, casting warmth across the deep blues and soft silvers of the sea. The sky above was pure powder blue, clear and crisp, the kind of winter light that reveals every fine detail. Just off Surfers Paradise, a 1.5-metre wave began to rise, smooth as glass and impossibly clean. It peeled down the bank with silky motion, precise and unbroken.

Perched high on the sand dunes, I stood with my 300mm lens ready, tracking the ocean’s rhythm. There were no surfers in the water, no interruptions. Just the sea moving on its own terms. The horizon was sharp as a line drawn with graphite, and every curve of the wave appeared sculpted and intentional. In that moment, the ocean became art, and I pressed the shutter.

This image, About to Break, captures a single, fleeting second before the wave collapsed. A moment of absolute tension and beauty. Water bending, holding, then letting go. It’s a portrait of nature in perfect form, untouched by people, surfboards, or sound. Just the pulse of the Earth, frozen in time.

Taken four months after Cyclone Alfred reshaped these sandbanks, the shot is also a subtle reminder of nature’s constant transformation. That this form existed at all. So symmetrical, so still, feels almost impossible. It’s rare to witness such clarity and control in the ocean, let alone photograph it.

This fine art coastal print is available in your choice of premium acrylic or canvas, ready to hang in any space that craves calm, power, and presence. Whether you’re styling a modern apartment, beach house, office, or gallery wall, About to Break brings a sense of balance and movement into the room.

Printed with archival-quality inks and materials, each piece is produced to the highest standards to ensure long-lasting clarity, detail, and vibrancy. The acrylic option offers a contemporary, glass-like finish that enhances depth and colour. The canvas option provides a soft, matte texture with a timeless feel.
