Coastal Aerial Photography on the Gold Coast

I launched my drone with a singular purpose: to capture video footage of the sleek new Coast building rising proudly over Garfield Terrace on the Gold Coast. Its gleaming glass exterior promised striking reflections, and I had envisioned a cinematic sequence. Flyovers that traced its curves, parallax shots dancing across its surface, and orbiting views worthy of any property developer’s showcase.

But it didn’t go to plan.

Despite careful planning, smooth tracking, and optimal daylight, something felt flat. The angles didn’t inspire. Light bounced awkwardly off the glass. Even with all its modern grandeur, the building shrank through the lens, dwarfed by the sweeping coastline and sky. The visuals lacked depth, presence, emotion. All the things that breathe life into aerial photography.

Still, I wasn’t ready to pack up.

I paused. Switched from video to still photo mode. Climbed higher.

At 120 meters up, as the drone hovered in near silence, the scene transformed. The shot I had been chasing slipped away and something far more powerful took its place.

From that altitude, I witnessed the coastline in its full winter clarity. Amber sands melted into jade-toned waters, the Gold Coast revealing itself like an abstract painting. Every wave, ripple, and grain seemed placed with intention. It was textured, vibrant, surreal. The aerial perspective flattened the landscape just enough to turn chaos into composition yet preserved the natural beauty that makes this coastline so iconic.

The drone became an artist’s brush, and I began composing each frame like a canvas. I captured image after image: the fluid transitions between sand and sea, the layers of turquoise and ochre, the minimalist drama of land meeting water. This wasn’t just a beautiful beach. It was geometry. It was light. It was contrast and calm and motion all at once.

Then I rotated the gimbal upward.

Suddenly I was looking at the full arc of the coastline from the sharp angles of the Jewel towers in the south, stretching past the rolling dunes toward Burleigh Heads, and sweeping all the way up to the unmistakable silhouette of Q1 at Surfers Paradise and the arc of Main Beach. The sky was a flawless winter blue. No wind. No haze. Just absolute clarity. A gift for any aerial photographer and something no amount of planning could guarantee.

What began as a technical project to document modern architecture evolved into a powerful creative experience. Amber Sand and Jade Water is more than just a photograph. It is a moment of stillness, perspective, and unexpected beauty.
