Heart Reef

As a professional photographer, few experiences compare to the thrill of photographing the world from above, especially when the subject is as iconic and delicate as Heart Reef, nestled within the Great Barrier Reef. For years, it had been on my bucket list: capturing that perfect, heart-shaped coral formation from the sky, under the clearest blue canopy imaginable.

It took careful planning. I booked a seat on a small Cessna aircraft departing from Airlie Beach, timing it for the dry season when the skies are at their most cooperative and the reef dazzles in full colour. As we taxied down the runway, my camera was already in my lap, lens polished, settings dialed in, fingers itching with anticipation.

As we ascended, the ocean below transformed into a living mosaic. Blues layered upon blues, turquoise shallows, deep navy drop-offs, and every shade in between. From above, the Great Barrier Reef isn’t just a natural wonder; it’s a masterpiece, surreal and endless.

And then, there it was. Heart Reef.

It appeared almost shyly at first, small in size but powerful in presence. Perfectly symmetrical and unmistakably shaped like a heart, it floated in the ocean like a symbol etched by nature itself. The pilot circled gently, tilting the wing just enough for me to get the shot, several shots, in fact.

The sky was flawless that day, not a single cloud to cast a shadow. The sun lit the reef from directly above, turning the corals into a glowing patchwork of aqua, jade, and sapphire. It was exactly as I had imagined it in my mind for years—but somehow even more breathtaking.

Shooting through the Cessna’s open window, I steadied my camera against the wind and framed the reef perfectly in the composition, ocean stretching endlessly around it, the heart right in the middle, both fragile and defiant. A symbol of nature’s quiet ability to surprise us.

It was over in minutes, but it felt eternal. As we flew back toward the mainland, I reviewed the images on the back of my camera. There it was: a photograph of Heart Reef under a perfect blue sky, a once-in-a-lifetime image that told a story without a single word.

Photographing it from that little Cessna reminded me why I do what I do, not just to document beauty, but to chase it, to fly toward it, and when everything aligns… to capture it forever.
