The Morning That Kept Giving, this morning’s sunrise!
The alarm was set for 6:00 a.m. ~ a calculated move, hoping to catch a few hot air balloons rising in the western sky over the Gold Coast. But at 5:45, instinct stirred me awake.
I stepped quietly from the bedroom into the lounge of our Surfers Paradise apartment. The skyline was still asleep, but out east, through the glass, an orange glow was already pressing against the horizon.
I leaned down and kissed my 34-week pregnant wife on the cheek, whispering, “I’m going to take photos on the beach of the sunrise.”
She murmured through the rhythm of her breathing, calm and steady, like the tide.
Camera in hand, I made my way down to the sand. My first shutter clicked at 6:19 a.m.
Usually, I shoot a dozen frames and head back up. But not today.
The sky kept shifting. Gold turned to rose. Rose to orange. Then, like someone pulled open the ceiling of the world, the entire sky ignited, peach, violet, ember, fire. A sunrise that refused to be ordinary.
For 30 minutes, I stayed on the beach, capturing every wave, every colour, every breath of light. By the time it faded, I wasn’t sure if I’d seen a sunrise or a once-in-a-lifetime performance.
This morning, I didn’t see any hot air balloons.
But I captured something better, a reminder that even in the predictable, the world can still surprise you.
And I couldn’t wait to show Martina what I had captured for her.
