Twelve Apostles

Description

As a professional photographer based on the Gold Coast, I’ve chased light across continents from impressive pagodas in Myanmar to golden reefscapes in Queensland. But there was always one iconic Australian shot that had eluded me: the Twelve Apostles, standing tall along Victoria’s rugged coastline. I didn’t want it moody or windswept I dreamed of photographing them under a perfect blue sky, the ocean glowing turquoise beneath a clear sun.

So I flew to Melbourne and stayed in Torquay, camera gear in tow, and hit the start of the Great Ocean Road with the kind of excitement you feel when you know you’re about to witness something truly epic.

The drive itself was a dream every bend revealing a new stretch of coastal beauty and stopping along the way to capture the coastline. Cliffs dropping into deep blue, waves curling into beaches tucked beneath ancient forest, surfers dotted in the swell, and every stop begging to be photographed. But I had one goal: to reach the Twelve Apostles with the sun high and the sky clear.

By early afternoon, the conditions were flawless a bold, cloudless sky, the Southern Ocean calm but full of presence. I pulled into the car park, grabbed my Canon DSLR, and followed the walkway to the viewing platform, heart pounding.

And then, I saw them.

Limestone giants rising out of the sea, sunlit and sculpted by time. The contrast was striking golden stacks against sapphire water, under a sky that looked painted. I launched the drone carefully, letting it hover just beyond the cliffs, and began capturing the coastline from above.

From the air, the Apostles looked even more powerful. The drone revealed angles you could never see from land—arches hidden behind stacks, shadows stretching across the ocean floor, sea spray catching the sunlight like glitter. I framed wide panoramas, the light bouncing off every ripple and rock.

It was everything I had imagined and more. No haze. No wind. Just the raw, ancient beauty of Australia’s southern coast under perfect weather.

That day, I didn’t just get the shot I fulfilled a vision I’d carried for years. A moment where Australia’s wild beauty met ideal light, and I was lucky enough to be there, camera in hand.

Driving the Great Ocean Road to photograph the Twelve Apostles in full sun wasn’t just another assignment—it was a reminder of why I do what I do. To chase light, to capture timeless places, and to freeze in a frame what words take 1,000 to emulate, because a picture is worth a thousand words.
