The Old Tree in Brisbane City Botanic Gardens
It was one of those perfect Brisbane winter days, cool in the shade, warm in the sun, and the sky painted a brilliant, uninterrupted blue. I had come to the City Botanic Gardens with no particular plan, just my camera and the hope of finding something worth capturing.
As I wandered through the winding paths, I spotted it, an enormous old tree standing like a guardian near the centre of the gardens. Its massive branches stretched outwards, some so long they arched down to brush the earth, as if bowing in slow motion. I walked closer, drawn in like everyone else who passed by.
This tree wasn’t just big. It was alive in the truest sense, weathered and wise, roots gnarled like clenched fists, bark rough and deeply furrowed. But it wasn’t intimidating. It was welcoming.
One of the lowest branches, thick as a small tree itself, dipped just low enough for little hands to grip and pull themselves up. Children could climb and crawl, pretending they were on a pirate ship or exploring a jungle, the tree cradling them in its natural architecture like a playground born from patience and time.
I stepped back, switched lenses, and started photographing.
The contrast was beautiful, the textured browns of the old trunk against the clean blue sky, the pops of colour from the kids’ clothes, the dappled sunlight filtering through the green leaves overhead. Every shot told a different story: of strength, of age, of joy, of wonder. The kind of scene that didn’t need a caption.
It struck me that this tree had probably watched generations come and go stood tall through storms and sunshine, silently offering shade, shelter, and imagination. Today, it offered all three once more.
As I reviewed the images later, one stood out. The ancient limbs reached down to the earth as well as skyward, timeless and strong.
I smiled. That photo wasn’t just about a tree. It was about childhood, freedom, and the quiet magic that lives in the spaces between roots and sky.
