I’d never watched an episode of Game of Thrones. Still haven’t. But in 2018, I found myself in Dubrovnik: the so-called “King’s Landing”, not chasing fantasy, but light.

I had one goal: to capture the old city from above, just as the sun dipped into the Adriatic. No maps. No schedules. Just a tuk-tuk driver with a cracked smile and a mission to get me up the hill before the moment passed. The road twisted like a snake, narrow and chaotic, one hand gripping my gear, the other clutching the rail as we flew past olive trees and cliffside villas.

We reached the lookout. I jumped out, legs still vibrating from the climb, heart still catching up. And then it hit me.

The light.

The stone walls of Dubrovnik, glowing amber. The sea, stretched into purple glass. The rooftops below, tiled and tangled, catching the last heat of the day. The sky didn’t just turn, it performed. Orange. Violet. Gold. Every frame looked like a painting.

I stood alone, high above centuries of history, shooting in silence. No dragons. No battles. Just an unfiltered, unscripted kind of magic.

I didn’t need to know the show.
I’d seen the real version.
