Description

As a professional photographer, I’ve always been drawn to contrasts, the meeting of light and shadow, calm and chaos, sky and earth. And nowhere does contrast unfold more dramatically than the Glass House Mountains in Queensland.

I’d photographed them before, but I’d never caught them exactly how I wanted: with the drama of a coming storm, the warmth of sunset battling the clouds, the ancient volcanic peaks silhouetted against a moody sky. That vision had haunted my imagination for years.

So one late afternoon, I packed my gear and drove north, chasing a forecast that promised just enough light before the rain. My destination: Wild Horse Mountain Lookout a steep but short hike to a tower perched perfectly for panoramic views over the Glass House Mountains.

When I arrived, the sky was already heavy, thick with charcoal-grey clouds. Most of the visitors packed up and called it off. But to me, it looked promising ominous, beautiful, alive. The air was electric with humidity, the wind starting to whip through the trees. And just below the horizon, a narrow band of gold began to burn through the gloom.

I launched the drone just as the sun began its slow descent behind the clouds. From above, the Glass House Mountains stood like sleeping giants, their jagged forms rising boldly from the patchwork of forest and farmland. The light, filtered through thick clouds, came in streaks fiery golden orange rays breaking through in dramatic shafts, as if the sky was cracking open.

It was exactly the moment I’d been chasing.

My drone hovered steadily above the lookout, capturing the mountains from a god’s-eye view. Mt Tibrogargan, Mt Beerwah, and Mt Coonowrin all stood in silhouette, their dark forms glowing at the edges with backlight from the sun. The clouds above them churned like waves in slow motion. The colours were unreal deep amber and copper bleeding into steel blue at the top, the kind of palette you can’t predict and can’t recreate.

Each photo felt like a reward earned not just for showing up, but for believing in the potential of a moody sky.

And then, like a curtain call, the first drops of rain began to fall. I brought the drone down, wiped the camera dry, and stood for a moment under the shelter of the tower, watching the landscape disappear into mist.

I drove home soaked but smiling, memory cards full.

That afternoon at Wild Horse Lookout, I captured more than just a photograph I captured the atmosphere of a moment suspended between light and storm, when nature puts on its most dramatic show. The kind of shot that reminds you why you carry a camera everywhere you go everyday.

Because sometimes, the best light comes just before the rain.
