Description

I was driving home along the Gold Coast Highway, the kind of summer evening where the sky melts from burnt orange to deep indigo in what feels like seconds. I’d just wrapped up a coastal photo shoot, tripod packed, memory cards full, the light nearly gone, but something caught my eye as I passed through Broadbeach to Surfers Paradise.

The Jewel Towers.

They stood there at the southern edge of Surfers Paradise like three crystal shards rising from the sand, glassy, angular, and glowing. Just as I passed them, the dusk lights flickered on, illuminating the towers from within. The reflections bounced off the ocean to the east and the cityscape to the north.

And in that moment, I knew; I wasn’t going home. Not yet.

With a photographer’s instinct kicking in, I turned sharply down a side street, found a quiet spot, and pulled over. My drone was already charged, ready to fly. Within minutes I was standing on the edge of the footpath, eyes to the sky, the sound of the drone buzzing into the air as the magic hour hit its peak.

As it climbed higher, the full scene unfolded before me.

To the north, Surfers Paradise came alive.
The skyline shimmered, each high-rise blinking into life like stars on the horizon. The Q1 tower pierced the deepening sky, and below it, the city streets lit up—traffic, streetlights, beachfront cafés. The Jewel Towers sat in the foreground, proud and polished, their edges lit with subtle light, the kind that makes glass look like the fire that ironically turns sand into glass.

From above, I panned slowly—framing the view as the twilight blues of the sky faded into the golden glow of the city lights. Waves rolled gently onto the shore below, just visible in the last light, and the pattern of lit windows told a story of life: dinners being made, families relaxing, tourists soaking in their first night on the coast.

It was that perfect 5-minute window where everything feels in balance, the natural light and artificial glow, the end of day and beginning of night.

I took a few final shots, locking in exposures, then hovered for one last wide frame, the Jewel Towers in the foreground, the city stretching north into the darkness, and the Pacific Ocean glowing navy blue to the east.

I brought the drone down slowly, still buzzing from the spontaneity of it all. Sometimes, photography isn’t about the shoot you planned, it’s about chasing a feeling, catching those moments that refuse to wait.

That night, the Jewel lit the fuse. Surfers Paradise lit the skyline. And I drove home under a sky that still felt alive, memory card fuller than expected and a little reminder that sometimes the best images come after you thought the day was done.
