Description
It was one of those quiet winter Sundays, the kind made for stillness. The NRL hummed on the TV, a cold Corona in hand, and the soft glow of late afternoon filtered through the curtains. Outside, the world was quiet. Inside, it was sanctuary.
Then, as often happens with nature and great stories, the sky called.
A sudden blaze of colour ignited across the Nerang River, magentas, fiery oranges, copper streaks pouring over the water like liquid gold. The kind of sky you don’t just witness… you chase.
I grabbed the drone, and crossed the road, adrenaline replacing serenity. The vacant car park became a launchpad for wonder.
The drone lifted just in time to catch the action: jet skis tearing up the river, slicing through reflections just emerging from beneath the Isle of Capri Bridge. To the right, Q1 stood tall like a silent sentinel. To the left, Roma Park, calm and still in contrast to the river’s movement. Every frame was cinematic.
But not everything in the frame was expected.
About 45 seconds into the flight, I heard footsteps. A man approached, slightly hesitant, holding, bizarrely a 75cm Star Wars stormtrooper figurine under his arm. He looked both amused and suspicious.
“My partner sent me down,” he began. “She wants to know why you’re filming our apartment.”
I turned the screen toward him. “I’m capturing that,” I said, nodding toward the technicolour masterpiece unfolding over the water. In the opposite direction to their apartment. “You’ve got the best sunset of the year right now.”
He paused, peered at the display, and broke into a grin.
“Hang on… you’re Zac who used to bring your car in. I was your mechanic back in the day.”
We both laughed. I waved up at his partner on the balcony, giving her a thumbs-up that all was well.
Before leaving, he gave a smile and said, “If you ever need your car serviced again, let me know.”
And just like that, the moment folded back into itself, the kind of unscripted twist only a Sunday sunset can deliver: where the sky shifts everything, and even stormtroopers wander the Gold Coast with purpose.
Because when life interrupts you, sometimes it’s bringing you a better story.
