Whitehaven Over Top

As a professional photographer, there are certain places that seem to live permanently in the imagination. These are the locations that appear so often in your thoughts that they feel almost mythical until you finally stand there with camera or drone in hand, ready to capture them exactly as you once envisioned.

For me, Whitehaven Beach was one of those rare places. I had seen the images online countless times. Everyone has. The brilliant white silica sand, the striking turquoise water, and the long, sweeping shoreline make it one of the most photographed beaches in the world. But I wanted more than the typical aerial view. My goal was to photograph Whitehaven from the perspective of the sand itself, launching the drone slowly to reveal the full majesty of the landscape from beach level upward. I wanted a viewpoint that felt intimate and grounded, yet still showcased the grandeur that this tropical wonder is known for.

Getting there was no small effort. The journey began with two metre swells, heavy clouds, and persistent rain. The conditions made the trip feel unpredictable, and as we rounded the southern end of Whitsunday Island the swells finally flattened, but the clouds opened again, releasing another burst of rain. Our boat captain remained calm, explaining that he had seen weather like this many times before. One of the passengers mentioned that it was his third visit to Whitehaven and that each time it had been raining when he arrived.

We cruised toward Hill Inlet, taking in the scenery despite the weather, and on the return the skies began to change. The rain slowed, the clouds began to break apart, and the first touches of sunlight reached the water. It was the moment I had been waiting for. Knowing the Civil Aviation Safety Authority rules required a thirty metre distance from people, my wife encouraged me to walk along the silica sand toward the southern end of the beach where there were fewer visitors.

Carrying my carefully packed drone, I stepped onto the softest sand I have ever felt. The pure silica was fine, cool, and perfectly smooth underfoot. With each step, the anticipation grew. I set up, took a deep breath, and sent the drone into the air.

From above, the view was even more spectacular than I had imagined. The water was painted in endless gradients of green, shifting gently on the edge of the Coral Sea. It was so clear that I could see stingrays gliding effortlessly through the shallows, their shadows dancing across the pale sand beneath them. The curves of the shoreline framed the scene like an artist’s brushstroke, and the late morning light gave the colours a depth that felt almost surreal.

In that moment, standing barefoot on a beach that felt otherworldly, I realised I was capturing more than just a landscape. I was photographing the essence of paradise itself. Every frame felt like a gift.

When the drone touched down and I reviewed the footage on the screen, I knew I had finally achieved the image that had been in my mind for years. Whitehaven from the sand, rising upward into an expansive aerial view, under a perfectly blue sky. The timing could not have been more fortunate. Just two minutes later, five boats full of tourists arrived at the southern end of the beach, filling the once quiet stretch with noise and movement.

I sat for a moment with the salt still on my skin and the fine silica sand between my toes, feeling completely present. I realised then that some places are not only meant to be seen, they are meant to be felt. If a photographer is fortunate enough to capture that feeling in a single image, they are not simply recording a scene, they are telling a story. This was one story I will carry with me forever, both in memory and in the frame that now holds my vision of Whitehaven Beach.
