Dune Sunrise

Description

As a professional photographer, I’ve chased light across continents, from icy mountaintops in the Swiss Alps to bustling cityscapes in Europe. But sometimes, the most magical moments unfold right in your own backyard.

On this particular morning, I found myself on the Gold Coast, camera slung over my shoulder, making my way down a quiet track toward the beach. It was still dark, the world holding its breath in that precious hush before sunrise. The sand was cool beneath my feet, the salty scent of the ocean already filling the air. I could hear the waves rolling in softly, as if waking up with me.

But my eyes weren’t set on the ocean not yet. I had a different vision in mind.

Nestled just before the shore, the sand dunes stood silently, their gentle curves cradling tufts of long grass that swayed in the morning breeze. It’s a part of the beach most overlook, rushing straight to the water. But not me. I’d come for the small details the kind of beauty that whispers rather than shouts.

As the first streaks of amber broke over the horizon, I dropped to one knee, eye to the viewfinder. That’s when I saw it tiny droplets of dew clinging to the dune grass, catching the early light like a scattering of diamonds. Each blade was laced with nature’s delicate touch, reflecting the soft hues of dawn: blush pinks, golds, and the palest blue.

The light changed with every passing minute, and I worked quickly, breathing in the serenity of the moment while trying to freeze it forever in a frame.

With each photo, I captured not just the dew or the grass, but the feeling of standing there alone, present, connected to the land. It was one of those shoots that reminded me why I picked up a camera in the first place: to honour the details most people miss. Which I realised as a young photographer, I saw the world a ittle differently to most.

By the time the sun had risen above the water and the world had stirred awake, I was already heading back, sand on my feet, SD card full. I didn’t just photograph a sunrise that morning I captured a quiet kind of magic, nestled in the dunes where no one was looking. And that, to me, is what being a photographer is all about.
