Description
There’s something special about flying a drone at sunset. When the sky becomes a canvas, the light turns soft and golden, and the familiar transforms into something almost surreal. That evening, I launched from a quiet patch just south of Surfers Paradise, drone humming gently as it rose into the warm, still air.
As I gained altitude, the city began to unfold beneath me, and there it was. Q1, towering like a beacon in the soft evening glow. I framed it to the left of the shot, its glass facade catching the last golden rays of the sun. Beyond it, the shoreline curved gracefully toward The Spit, a thin line of sand stretching out into the sea.
But it was the sky that stole the scene.
Fluffy clouds, thick and soft like whipped cream, hung low behind the skyline, their edges kissed with fire. The whole sky looked as if it had been dipped in gold—rich, warm, and endless. The sunlight filtered through the layers, casting long shadows over the buildings and painting the water with streaks of orange and peach.
I hovered there, motionless, letting the scene breathe.

The photo felt like a dream. Q1 standing proud against the horizon, the coastline drawing the eye north, and those glowing clouds framing it all like a painting too perfect to be real. From the air, the Gold Coast revealed a balance I hadn’t seen from the ground. Urban strength, natural grace, and the drama of the sky all woven together.
As the sun sank lower and the colours deepened, I let the drone drift a little, capturing the light’s final moments before it faded into dusk.
That sunset flight wasn’t just a photo op. It was a reminder of how, with the right timing and perspective, even the most familiar skyline can take your breath away.
